Thirteen Alimak hoists used on multi-story residential development in Istanbul

Avrupa Konutlari, Istanbul, Turkey

Turkish contractor uses Alimak construction hoists for fast deployment of materials and manpower on giant housing project.

Thirteen Alimak hoists are being used on a large-scale residential development in Istanbul, Turkey, for lifting men and materials to all levels of the 13 tower blocks on the project.

The Avrupa Konutlari, or European Residences, project is being developed by the Turkish government Mass Housing Administration, TOKI, and built by contractor Artas Oztas ve Dogu is Ortakligi.

Located in the city’s Gaziosmanpasa district opposite Europe’s largest shopping mall, the new Turkmall shopping centre, and adjacent to the TEM Highway, the project is in a rapidly developing and desirable part of the city.

There are more than 2,500 units on the single compound, with units for sale off-plan ranging from 63 m2 studios to 165 m2 four-bedroom apartments.

There are also five half-Olympic sized swimming pools on the compound, along with a clubhouse and 24 h security.

As a European-style development, the project is unusual and particularly high-profile for Istanbul. The 13 Alimak units have been supplied by Alimak Hek’s distributor in Turkey, Atilla Dural, 10 of the units being on rental from Atilla Dural’s rental arm, Duramak.

The tower blocks vary in height between 24 and 34 stories, with the larger ones also utilizing tower cranes for materials lifting.

Different-sized Alimak units are being used, according to the size of the tower. There are six Alimak CH 20/30 model hoists, which can travel at a speed of 40 m/min and transport a load of 2 tons, or 24 persons; five Alimak Scando 450 hoists, a recent addition to the Alimak range, which can travel at a speed of 54 m/min and also transport a load of 2 tons; and two Alimak CH 19/32 FC models, which can travel at 35 m/min and carry a load of 1.8 tons. Most of the rental units are less than two years old.

The single-mast hoists are attached to the side of each of the buildings, allowing the cages to travel to the top floors, either acting as the sole means of lifting building materials or supplementing the tower cranes.

All of the 13 towers have now been topped out, with the project due for handing over late in 2009.
